Blog Actually

Today is the last day of February Blogging 101 (it's March, 1st anyway) and for me, February this year was a perfect month for my blogs, especially my WordPress blog. Why?
First, I had holiday. Some of you may wonder how a medical student could write more than one post in a day. Well, I had a lot of free time.
Second, I joined Blogging 101. It was a great experience. I met many bloggers who posted interesting things, inspired me, and were very supportive. Before I joined Blogging 101, I only wrote posts for myself, I rarely commented on other bloggers, and I followed a few people. After Blogging 101, I started to get involved in the community and it was an amazing experience.
When I get involved in blogging community, I have new friends and read people's mind (whoa, I feel like Severus Snape performing Legilimency) without knowing them personally, even without knowing their names and faces. 
So, dear readers and fellow Blogging 101 participants, thank you for your support.

Word List to Story: When I was 15

I once wrote that I had a friend who liked Panic! At The Disco and we often tried to interpret their lyrics.
That friend and I also made story in our way. First, she made a list of random words. After that, I made a story using the words in the list. I also added more words, of course.
Here are some words in the list that my friend created:

  • flood
  • winter
  • raindrop
  • downpour
From those words, I create a paragraph like this one.
       It's cold like flood in winter here. Something fell from the sky. Raindrops began to fall. Downpour would be here.

That part was quite fine since the words are somehow related: flood, winter, raindrop, downpour. 

Other words in the list are:

  • vampire
  • crow
  • mountain
  • throat
I then write:
       Someone came and sat beside me. He looked like a vampire from mountain. He told me that his sore throat made his voice sounded like old crow.

I showed the story to my English course teacher and she said, "You include these words? Wow..."

If one day, you want to write something but don't know what to write, you can make a word list first then turn it into a story.

Brain Meninges: Two Mothers and a Spider

Meninges are membranes that protect central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). From external to internal, the meninges are dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. In this post, I will talk about brain meninges (spinal meninges are a little different to brain meninges).

Dura Mater
Literally, dura mater means tough mother. It consists of two layers: periosteal and meningeal. The periosteal attaches to the cranium and the meningeal layer continues to caudal as spinal dura mater.

Arachnoid Mater
Arachnoid mater is separated from dura mater by subdural space. Arachnida means spider. Why is this membrane called arachnoid? Below arachnoid mater, there is subarachnoid space. There is spider web-like extension in this space for securing arachnoid mater to pia mater. 

Pia Mater
Pia mater means gentle mother. As the name implies, it's a gentle membrane rich with tiny blood vessels that wraps the brain.

I've Filled the White Space

In my previous post, I showed my doodle with a lot of white space and I didn't know what to do with the white space. Jen the Artist from Under Open Skies suggested me to draw black and white patterns that were smaller than my colour pieces but not so small. Shruti from DeepLifeInsights said that I might use light colour base for the background. However, I ended up filling the white space with so small patterns and not so light colour.

Weekly Doodle: Celebrate the Colours

Today's assignment from Blogging 101 is to try another blogging event. I found the Weekly Doodle event and the latest doodle theme is celebration.
What I remember about any celebration is colour. It's the yellow "janur" (coconut young leaf) in many Indonesian weddings or the red colour of Chinese new year. Since I'm not so good at creating a celebration image, I doodle colour.


I've just realised there is still a lot of white space. What should I do with the white space?


A Story about Deadline

When I read that quote for the first time, I laughed. "It's true!" I said. 
I'm not a newspaper journalist so I don't experience crazy deadline but I understand that "skill is improved by a deadline" part. Usually, I have three days to finish an article and the process goes like the following.

Day I
I interview. After that I'm like, "I still have a lot of time. I'll write the article tomorrow. I'm still tired from that interview."

Day II
I try to write the article. After writing a few sentences, I read the sentences again and I'm like, "This is terrible. I can't even stand reading an article that's written like this." Then, I think, "I guess I should take a rest and maybe I can find the proper sentence later."

Day III
Few hours before deadline, even an hour before deadline, I can write well and the article is fine.

Note: I don't promote procrastination. I just share my experience.

Ande-ande Lumut

This morning, I bought ande-ande lumut. In Javanese, "Ande-ande Lumut" can be a name of folktale character, or a food.

The food above is ande-ande lumut. It is made of cassava (Manihot esculenta). The thick white liquid (or sauce) is made of coconut milk. I asked my mother, "How can coconut milk become thick?" She said, "Some of the cassava is grated and it made the coconut milk become thick." However, I read some recipes that doesn't mention "grate some cassava". The recipes just tell to stir the sauce until it become thick.

To be honest, my family haven't made ande-ande lumut for a long time but here I will try to write a recipe without measurement (duh).

You will need:
  • cassava
  • coconut milk
  • sugar or palm sugar
  • pandan leaf (Pandanus amaryllifolius)
  • salt (only a little)
  • water if necessary
How to cook it
  1. Peel and cut the cassava into small pieces.
  2. Grate some cassava (this step can be skipped).
  3. Boil all the stuff and stir until the cassava is soft enough to bite and the coconut milk becomes thick.
I will edit or re-write this post someday after I make it again (or not).

I Draw Moomins

My Polish friend told me about the Moomins. The Moomins are central characters in books and comic strip by Swedish-speaking Finnish writer and illustrator, Tove Jansson. You can read more about the Moomins in wikipedia and Moomin's website.
Today, I tried to draw four Moomins.

Jigglypuff Cubeecraft

I only know a little about Pokémon but one Pokémon that I know and I find interesting is Jigglypuff.

The cute round Pokémon in the image above is Jigglypuff. Read more here. Jigglypuff can sing lullaby until its opponent falls asleep. Moral of the story: in the battle, no matter how smart or strong you are, if you're unconscious, you lose.

Converting Decimal to Different Base

In this post, I said that if you wanted to convert number from different base to decimal we could use table. Well, I'm sorry that I was wrong because I've just remembered that we use table to convert decimal to other bases. There may be table for converting to decimal but I haven't known yet.

Come Out and Play with Basic Genetics

Recently, the girls from Faraday's Candle write a post entitled "Dr. Brian May and the Zodiacal Light!" In that post they say that they remember Zodiacal light when they think about rock music because Brian May, Queen's guitarist, made his PhD thesis in astrophysics on Zodiacal light. Whoa, another story of smart musician.
When thinking about smart musician, I often remember Bryan "Dexter" Holland, the Offspring's lead singer. He studied molecular biology and is involved in HIV/AIDS related research. 
To be honest, in university,  I failed a lot in molecular biology subject. That's why I think Dexter Holland is a genius.
In molecular biology, we study biology in molecular level. We learn a lot about cell, chromosome, DNA, gene, RNA, and heredity. In this post, I want to share a website that helped me study moleculary biology in a fun way: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/ To get started, you can click on "Tour of Basic Genetics". 
I give you some spoilers from that tour. Heredity is passing of traits from generation to generation. Trait is influenced by gene and environment. Now, what is gene? How can environment influence the trait? Well, I don't want to spoil too much.
More spoilers -> Nucleus of the cell contains chromosomes. In each chromosome, DNA is packaged. DNA contains "instruction" for the cell in the form of gene.

Now I have to answer Owlivia's questions. I have to admit that some quoestions are difficult to answer.
1. Who is someone, other than your family, who has had a really big impact on your life?
My close friends has had a really big impact on my life and I can't choose of them. There are 6 people anyway.
2. You have one hypothetical wish, what do you use it for? (No wishing for more wishes)
I wish I had a P.O. box. I really want to exchange letter and postcard but I don't want to share my home address. 
3. Do you have catchphrase? Explain the story behind it. If you don’t have a catchphrase, make one up, and explain the story behind THAT.
Haha... I don't have catchphrase but you insist me to make one up. Well, my catchphrase would be, "I'm going to the bookstore." I make that catchphrase because bookstore is the place I visit when I need peace and inspiration.
4. What question do you NOT want to answer?
Actually, no matter how uncomfortable I am with certain questions, I usually answer. If not honestly, then I lie. I still answer anyway.
5. What is your favorite ‘favorite’ question to answer? (Favorite color, favorite food, favorite laundry detergent etc.) And what is the answer to that question?
Favourite book :D Question about favourite book is actually difficult to answer since I have many but I like the question. One of my favourite books is Hujan Bulan Juni, a poetry book by Sapardi Djoko Damono, an Indonesian poet.

Everytime I see Google doodle, I always save the image.
7. What is something weird about yourself?
My friend call me weird because I'm fine with going out and eating in cafe (or anywhere that's not home) alone. I really am fine with eating alone.

I'm mostly introverted but I can be good at acting as extroverted person.

I want to be in Hogwarts. Why? Because it's magical.

2 + 2 = ?

Today's assignment in Blogging 101 is about writing with prompt. I've made one post for that assignment but I want to write again.
In today's assignment post, the prompt example is, "Two plus two equals four: yes or no?"
Reading that prompt, I remember Sujiwo Tejo, an Indonesian artist who is also interested in math. He once said, "Math is not exact science. It's a science of agreement. You can say 1 + 1 = 2 only if you agree to use base 10. If you use different base, the result can be different."
What is base? You can read this if you want to learn about it.
I will try to explain about base or numeral system. The numeral system we usually use is base 10 or decimal. It consists of ten numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. There is also base 2 or binary which only consists of two numbers: 0 and 1. Base 3 consists of three numbers: 0, 1, and, 2.
So, 2 + 2 = 4 in decimal. What if we use base 3? Let's see how numbers are written in base 3: 0, 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 20, 21, 22, 100, 101, .... From this, we can see that in base 3, 2 + 2 = 11
In base 4, numbers are written as 0, 1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 20, 21, 22, .... So, 2 + 2 = 10 in base 4.
What if we want to convert number from different base into decimal? Well, you can use a table (not the table you see here) but I can't upload the table. Maybe later (procrastination alert!!!). Other method is like this I explain below.
For example, if I want to convert 111 base 2 into decimal, it will be
1112 = 1 x 22 + 1 x 21 + 1 x 2= 7
Another example, converting 23 base 5 into decimal will be like
235 = 2 x 51 + 3 x 50 = 12
It's been a long time that I haven't studied math. How is my explanation? Is it understandable or confusing? Sorry, if you're confused.

Wayang on the Wall

I got a prompt from the Daily Post. The prompt is like this:

Wall to Wall

What do you display on the walls of your home — photos, posters, artwork, nothing? How do you choose what to display? What mood are you trying to create?
On the walls of my home, there are photos and artworks. We choose what looks good and we don't try to create any specific mood.
Among the artworks, I have two wayang which my cousin gave.

Wayang is Indonesian traditional puppet. There are many kinds of wayang. The picture above is an example of Javanese wayang kulit. The story performed in wayang is usually taken from Ramayana or Mahabharata, two famous Indian epics. Some parts and characters in Indonesian version are different to those in Indian version.
Those characters in the picture above are Gatotkaca and Hanoman. I'm going to write about them according to Javanese version. Gatotkaca (also written as Gathutkaca in Javanese version) is Bhima's and Arimbi's son. In Indian version, he's depicted as a rakshasa but in Javanese he's a human. He was thought to be invincible until he's killed by Karna in Bharatayudha. Hanoman (or Hanuman, or Anoman) is the son of Batara Guru and Anjani.
I guess I will write more about wayang in my future post. Now, I'm going to revise anatomy again.

That Song from Jodha Akbar

My family like to watch Jodha Akbar serial. It's an Indian serial about a Mughal emperor and his Rajput wife.
I read an article from India Opines that Jodha Akbar is historically inaccurate. However, there is also an article in the site entitled, "12 Reasons Why We Love Jodha Akbar Serial". The 10th reason in that article is the background music. "In Aankhon Mei Tum" is my mother's personal favourite. She said, "This song is beautiful. I even like it while it's not the type of music I usually listen." 
Anyway, I've just found that song with pictures from Disney's Tangled in YouTube.

Last year (2014) on February 14th, it was dark and dusty outside. The night before, Mount Kelud erupted. It was located in Blitar, East Java but the volcanic ash also reached Solo, Central Java, my home.

Foods that Make Me Weak (in a Good Way)

In one of her post, Shruti said that food is her weakness. I'm now inspired to write about some foods that make me weak, in a good way.
1. Durian
Many Indonesians like durian. Well, some Indonesians don't like it. Some people may think that the smell is bad, like rotten food. However, for those who like durian, it smells nice and amazing. The combination of the smell and sweet taste makes durian an incredible fruit.
2. Chocolate
Who doesn't like chocolate? I don't need to explain further about it.
3. Fried shrimp
For your information, I have eczema. The condition can occur if I experience mental stress or eat excessive shrimps. I really said excessive because if I only eat a few fried shrimps, I will be fine.

A Book about Amazing Grandma

I found a post by Aggie. In that post, she wrote her New Year's resolution. Her 5th resolution in the list is read. I then recommended "Saga no Gabai Baachan" by Yoshichi Shimada. It's always the first book that comes to my mind every time someone asks for book suggestion.
The book is based on true story. It tells a story of Akihiro who lived with his grandmother, Grandma Osano, in Saga, Japan, after World War II. They live in poor condition but Grandma Osano Akihiro's grandma always know how to be happy and cheerful no matter what. I don't want to tell much about it because well, some people don't like spoiler.
A memorable quote from Grandma Osano in this book is, "There are two ways for poor people: gloomy poor and cheerful poor. We are cheerful poor people." The book I read is an Indonesian translation of the original Japanese version so if you read the English version, the words may be different.

p.s. I don't know Japanese. The book actual title is "Saga no Gabai Bāchan". My cousin, who can speak Japanese, told me that bāchan is read as baachan. 

Talking about Relationship

I join Blogging 101 and yesterday's task was to comment on at least four blogs I had never visited before and today's task is to write a post that builds on one of the comments I left yesterday. I actually commented on a lot of blogs but I forget some of them. Let's just talk.
I found this post by TJ. In that post he wrote a story about a girl who is .... I think it will be better if you read the post yourself so you can decide a proper adjective for that girl. You can also read my comment (yes, that lincahceria5).
I've said before that I'm not good at relationship advice so if a friend tells me about her (or his) relationship problem, I will just listen and respond a little. However, since it's just relationship, not marriage, my ultimate advice would be, "Tell them, then leave, end your relationship." I suggest my friend to tell because communication is important and it's better to let the other know what happens. I suggest them to leave because... Well, let's make it clear.
If your boyfriend or girlfriend makes you uncomfortable or ask you to do something against your principle, you should end the relationship before it's too late.
By the way, when I talk about my friend's relationship, it may be different to what you think. Watch this video by Jana first.
Many of us in Indonesia don't believe in sex before marriage, regardless of the religion. My friends' relationship mostly involve going out together, having meal together, or calling each other with "cheesy nickname". They don't have sex. They don't live together. They don't even kiss.

Whoa, I still don't believe that I finally write a relationship advice.

Feeling Left Out

I found a BuzzFeedViolet video entitled "When You Feel Left Out". In that video, Sara feels left out when she finds out that she wasn't invited by her friends.
For me, it's fine if my friends don't invite me to have fun together or such thing. I mostly feel left out when my friends don't inform me important thing like change in lecture schedule or group study. And, like Sara in the video, I also think like, "Have I done something wrong? Why didn't they inform me such important thing? Do they just forget? Are they that forgetful?" However, such situation doesn't impede my every thought.
I guess I should communicate better with my friends.

Student Journalist's Stupid Moment

I've mentioned before that I'm a student journalist. I interview people and I admit that sometimes I do stupid thing while interviewing someone.
In one interview, I shook the interviewee's hand and he looked startled. I then realised that we didn't actually shake hand. It was like, I took (or grabbed) his hand. He was startled then he knew that I wanted to shake his hand so we shook hand. Whoa, I guess I should learn how to shake hand properly next time.
Another time, there were three people. I should do quick interview to three of them. Since I only knew one person personally, I talked a lot to him and talk awkwardly to the other two. That was, I admit, not professional.
I think that's all I can remember. I may write more next time.

I like cat.
However, there is a stray cat who often comes to my home and she can be annoying. She's aggressive. She often scratches or bites us with no clear reason and I've just been scratched.
Actually, I won't mind having her as my pet but she can be scary.

Confidence in Blogging (My Confession)

I started this blog in 2013. When I made it, I told three friends who used to blog actively in high school. However, they were no longer high school students so they didn't blog a lot. I also told a Polish friend who then became my only one regular reader. Hey you, thanks for reading my blog.
I didn't share my blog in social media. I didn't join blogging community either. In short, I didn't want many people to read my posts. You may ask, "Then why do you blog if you don't share it to people?" 
The answer is I was insecure. I didn't share my blog to people I knew in real life because I thought they would see it as a blog full of complaint while in fact I just tried to be honest. I didn't join any blogging community online either because I wasn't confident of my writing style and content
This time I join Blogging 101 because I want to learn more about blogging. Beside that, I think it's better for me to show my blog up and get involved more in the community. I also show my blog to more people that I know in real life.
Anyway, I think my writing style doesn't change much. My insecurity about it was a matter of feeling. When I feel comfortable and confident of my blog, then I won't worry about what people think of me and my blog.

My Guilty Pleasure

My guilty pleasure is reading fanfiction. I admit I often read fanfiction. I don't mind telling people that I like it. However, I will never share what fanfiction I read to anyone because 1) some fanfictions are disturbing, 2) some fanfictions are too cheesy, 3) I don't want to ruin someone's imagination by sharing fanfiction that doesn't fit their personal taste, and 4) I somehow feel guilty when reading fanfiction.


Note: I laugh a lot while writing this post.

I currently join Roman architecture online course in Coursera. Click here if you're interested. The course is provided by Yale university.

My Blog Usernames

In Blogger, my name appears as Aku Menulis and in WordPress, it's lincahceria5. None of those is my real name.
"Aku Menulis" means I write. I have a folder in my laptop named "I Write". It contains my writing, of course. For my username, I chose the Indonesian words.
lincahceria is a merge of two words: "lincah" and "ceria". Lincah means agile, ceria means cheerful. My cousins once named his football team "Lincah Ceria". It sounds cute and not-footbally (is there such word?). I chose it as a name because, as usual, I lacked of idea and it was the first thing came to my mind.

Gething Nyanding

"Gething nyanding" is a Javanese idiom. Gething means hate and nyanding means approach or become close. It can be used as reminder that sometimes the thing or person that we hate may become the one that's close to us. So be careful with your hate.

I Change My Theme (or not)

I join Blogging 101 and today's task is about theme. I tried some themes in my WordPress blog then I decided to use the camera vintage theme again. This time, the camera at the top is different. I changed my Blogger theme to the bird watermark. It is the same theme I used long time ago for my blog when I was in high school.
Conclusion: I don't really change my theme.

Four Songs

In university, I have three close friends whom I share my crazy opinion with. Here I won't write about our crazy moment. I'll just make list of four songs that we like. 
Mantan terindah means the loveliest ex in Indonesian. This song is nice. We sometimes use it to mock one of us who has terrible ex.
When I make this post, the video from the link above "is not available in my country". I don't know why. Anyway, one day, one of us sang this song then she saw her crush and sang the song no. 2 in this list: Paint My Love.
This song is simply amazing. No wonder that my friend sang this when she saw her ex.
One of us (the girl in no. 3 and 2) wanted this song to be played in her wedding until one day somebody practiced to sing this song and it was awful. She then said, "He didn't sing well and he had destroyed my imagination."

I guess I will write more about my friends in other posts.

Whom I Want to Interview

I join the journalism club in my faculty. I've interviewed some people and written news. For me, interview is more interesting than news writing.
Since my journalism club belongs to the faculty, I mostly interview people from my faculty. However, if I'm given the chance, I want to interview Marianela Núñez or Polina Semionova. Why them? Because I like watching ballet and they're two of my favourite ballet dancers. If you click the link I put on their names in this post, you will see amazing acts and dances. I've watched many good dance but when I watch them, I not only watch but also feel.

In the description of this video, Carlos Acosta's role is Don Quixote but I thought he was Basilio. Can somebody explain to me? 

Why English?

I'm an Indonesian. My ethnic group is Javanese. Everyday I speak Javanese and Indonesian but I mostly write my blog posts in English. Not because I want to look more "international" but because I'm just comfortable to write in English.
I speak Javanese a lot. Even when I speak Indonesian or English, people can still notice my Javanese accent. However, I rarely write article in Javanese. It's a matter of habit, I know. I'm not used to it so it's difficult.
I speak and write Indonesian. However, I mostly write Indonesian in academic work: practicum report, discussion report, etc. It makes me feel "awkward" when writing an informal Indonesian article. Really, I feel awkward.
I rarely use English in everyday conversation but I write e-mails in English for my penpals. My e-mail writing style is like my blog post writing style. When I write a post, I often imagine that I write e-mail and tell a story to my penpal. The difference is, my posts can be read by many people.

Talking about My Blogs

It may be late to write about this blog but I'll write it anyway.
I have two blogs with same contents in WordPress and Blogger. My Blogger blog is, as you can see, belum-selesai.blogspot.com . "Belum selesai" means not finished yet in Indonesian. My WordPress blog is masihbersambung.wordpress.com . "Masih bersambung" means still continue in Indonesian.  The main reason I chose those words as my blog domain was my lacking of inspiration on what I should name my blogs. Other reason was I often tried to be philosophical (duh) so my blog names implied that we, humans, never feel "finished". We always have story, desire, or anything. We're not finished yet. We still continue.
