Mrs. Potts Made Me Smile

I did my random YouTubing (is there such thing) again and today I was inspired to listen to Disney song. Whoa, I've ever written about Disney song once before so if you feel bored or think that it would be a repetition, just don't read this post.
I found a video of Angela Lansbury singing Beauty and the Beast in a concert. She voiced Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast film. Watching the video, I smiled for about 3 minutes. I smiled when she spoke at the beginning then I smiled even wider when she sang. Her voice has soothing effect for me.

Northern Downpour: When I was 15

Few days ago, I rode my motorcycle from campus and I unconsciously sang Northern Downpour by Panic! At The Disco. I don't know why I sang that song. The song was released long time ago when I was 15 but in fact, it hasn't been erased from my memory.
When I was 15 and a 9th grader, I wasn't a great fan of Panic! At The Disco but one of my friend was. She showed me lyrics of the band's songs then we tried to interpret the lyrics together. Don't ask why we did that. We were just 15 years old and interested in the lyrics.
Now I'm 20 and I listen to the song again. It just makes me calm, for some reasons I don't know.

Conan for Healing

The title sounds strange, I know but it's quite true.
Last October, many people that my family knew died. One of them was murdered. Another one was my close friend.
The murder case was quite shocking until now. I thought I would only know murder from the news or fictional stories. Never in my life did I expect someone my family knew would experience it. However it happened.
Since that time, I couldn't read my Conan comics, considering that almost all cases in Conan are murder case. I was like, "There have been so many death recently without me including the fictional ones."
Yesterday, November 17th, I went to a bookstore and bought Conan. When I saw Conan, I told myself, "Why not? It's been a long time you haven't read it. Just try. You used to like it and you may still do."

I Want to Send Letter

Recently I'm interested in snail mail. I've even written one for my friend in Yogyakarta (I hope she gets it today).
Since I have some friends abroad, I actually want to write letters and send gifts to them but there are some problems. First, I can't share my home address to people whom I met online. Second, sending snail mail abroad is quite expensive for me.
If my journalism club had basecamp, I would use the basecamp address to send letter. Oh, maybe next time I'll write more about my journalism club.

Hello Again

I haven't posted in this blog for quite a long time. Hello, I come back and I will write again.

Nut and Pepper

They come, stay, then go. They sometimes pour this town with some nuts, sometimes pepper. People don't know who they are. Once upon a time they wear rainbow coloured robes, other time black shirt. They even have floral and stripped clothes. However, still people don't see who they actually are.

Note
Recently a friend of mine told me, or challenged me, to write fictional story. I myself don't write fiction often so I wrote this post as an attempt to write fiction. I just wrote what came to my mind so don't burden your thought by thinking who "they" are in that story because I don't even want to know. If I find out it will be nice, if I don't then I will still be fine. What do you think about this post then?

World Suicide Prevention Day

I've just known that today, September 10th 2014 is World Suicide Prevention Day. Keep on living, everyone!
This is a quick post. I will write more later. I just want to say that no matter how bad we feel about our lives, we can still find good things actually.

Some Disney Songs and Leo Tolstoy

I watched some videos of old Disney songs: "Beauty and the Beast" and "A Whole New World". I then thought it would be good if there was a violin cover for any of the songs and I found a violin and piano cover of Beauty and the Beast. The cover is beautiful, in my opinion. I opened Google while the song was playing and today, Tuesday, September 9th 2014, Google celebrates Leo Tolstoy's 186th birthday. I viewed the amazing Google Doodle and listened to the beautiful cover. I took that as treat for myself.

P.S. To be honest, I haven't read any of Leo Tolstoy's works. I have ever read Anna Karenina synopsis, not the novel.

Gift for Myself

Yesterday I went out to buy a gift for myself. Yes, you read it right. I didn't know why. Perhaps I just made an excuse to waste some money or perhaps I really needed something new. I went to a bookstore and headed to stationery section. I was tempted by a small box of crayons because it was cheap and it did look interesting. However, fortunately I could still think clearly and didn't buy it because I don't draw a lot and if I draw, I mostly use coloured pencils.
My attention was caught by post-it notes. Really, I'm a fan of post-it notes. They're just colourful, small, and cute stuffs and I use them quite often while studying or writing. I took a long time to decide which post-it notes to buy (duh) then I chose a set of folded sticky notes. I can fold the notes so some writing can be hidden. It takes form of cute pink rabbit by the way.

Slytherin and Hufflepuff

I sometimes think why Slytherin and Hufflepuff are two different things. I mean, Slytherin's famous trait is ambition while Hufflepuff's is hard work. Hard work goes well with ambition I think.
Talking about Hufflepuff and Slytherin, I found an article in Tumblr entitled Hufflepuff Vs. Slytherin and I was amused that the two house actually have many things in common (the article only mentions three but in this case, three is many), one of them is misinterpretation. Hufflepuff is often stereotyped as "being the rest", while Slytherin is evil.
What is society without stereotype anyway?

Why Studying Medicine is More Difficult than Learning Language (in My Opinion)

I still figure out the best way to study in medical school and I compare it to my language learning.
I learn language by listening to audio file while reading the text, or simply by watching video. Doing so, I learn almost all things needed while learning language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. After listening, I try to speak the words thus I learn to speak. While reading a text, I see the letters thus I also learn to write.
I guess later I have to study medicine as a whole thing. Should I? I mean, I should understand some histology and physiology while studying anatomy then I will learn patophysiology while studying physiology and histopathology while studying histology, etc. Well, it won't be so simple as language learning process but I will try.

Visiting Pottermore, Visiting My Younger Self

Recently I signed in Pottermore, after a long time. I signed up to Pottermore when I was 18. I got redwood wand with unicorn hair and was sorted to Hufflepuff.
Mr. Ollivander, the wand maker describe redwood wand, “Wand-quality redwood is in short supply, yet constant demand, due to its reputation for bringing good fortune to its owner. As is usually the case with wandlore, the general populace have the truth back to front: redwood wands are not themselves lucky, but are strongly attracted to witches and wizards who already possess the admirable ability to fall on their feet, to make the right choice, to snatch advantage from catastrophe. The combination of such a witch or wizard with a redwood wand is always intriguing, and I generally expect to hear of exciting exploits when I send this special pairing out from my workshop. “
My 18 year-old self didn’t have a lot of hard time and it means that I didn’t “fall”, I didn’t find difficulty to make choice, and I couldn’t snatch advantage from catastrophe since there wasn’t any catasrophe. As I grow up, I experience some hard time. I even “get lost” and fail more often. That way, I try to “fall on my feet”. I also make a lot of mistakes and from those mistakes I actually learn to make right choice. Later, I will be able to snatch advantage from catastrophe.
I have unicorn hair as wand core and the description is, “Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard.
"Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may 'die' and need replacing."
I may seem good and nice on the surface but inside I can be dark and conflicted so when I found out that my wand had unicorn hair, which is the most difficult to turn to Dark Arts, I thought, “Am I really that nice?” However, even Draco Malfoy had wand with unicorn hair and he wasn’t considered a nice guy.
I wasn’t surprised when I was sorted into Hufflepuff. In fact, I wanted to be a Hufflepuff. Some Hufflepuff qualities are hardworking, loyal, and just. My 18 year-old self had those qualities, especially hardworking but now I think that I don’t work so hard as I did and suddenly I feel like a “disgrace” to Hufflepuff. Maybe someday I will find out that I am a true Hufflepuff like Harry did Gryffindor after he pulled Gryffindor sword out of the Sorting Hat.

When You Feel Lost

When you feel lost, listen to Michael Bublé's Lost. I'm not kidding.
There are some periods in my life when I feel lost and I don't mean "lost in somewhere and don't know how to go home". It was time when I felt trapped in complicated problem and I just didn't know how to get out of it. I could get out anyway, no matter how big, annoying, and complicated the problem was.
Michael Bublé's Lost is good but if you feel lost and don't like the song, just remember that the problem will be over sooner or later and you will be fine.

Sites I Use While Learning Russian

I learn Russian mostly from internet and when learning language from internet, finding the "right" site is a kind of journey.
I first learned Russian when I was 15 and I only did it casually. I began with Russian alphabet from MasterRussian. At that time, I understand most letters but ы, ь, ъ. I also learned some Russian words and phrases from WaytoRussia. As time went by, I hadn't learned Russian again for a long time until one day, I was struck by inspiration to do it again. I found some lessons in Russian for Free and FunRussian YouTube channel. "Russian for Free" was actually good but for some reasons, I couldn't keep up with it. Finally I found Learn Russian and the lessons in that site reminds me of "Side by Side" book which I use in my English course long time ago. Let's see if I can keep up with the site.

They're Hot, They're Feminine: a German Lesson

In German language, every noun has gender: masculine, feminine, or neuter. I am quite amused to find out there are two hot things with feminine gender: Sonne (sun) and Hölle (hell). However, the hell contains Feuer (fire) which is neuter, and it will be a place for Teufel (devil) which is masculine.

Russian Lesson: Level Up! (I Dare Myself)

I said "Level up!" in Phil Lester's style by the way.

I'm a medical student who also learns languages -or- I'm a language learner who major in medicine. I thought, "Why don't I combine them: language and medicine?" so I dared myself to read a medical journal written in foreign language. This time I read a Russian medical journal.

Talking about medical journal, I admit that I'm not usually interested in it. I only read medical journal when I have to make a journal summary or when I need some information for group discussion. Let's see if I can be interested in medical journal later.

First I open Google Translate and type "Russian medical journal" then translate it into Russian. I search for the translation then I found Russian Medical Journal. I then click "Текущий номер" (current issue) and I read this paragraph:

Now let's try to understand. I used the help of Google Translate to understand so if you know a better translation please comment.

At the top of the paragraph there is 08 июля 2014 г, № 15. I guess 08 июля 2014 means July, 8th 2014 but I don't know what г means. Reading the title: Гастроэнтерология, I could just know that it means gastroenterology, the subject I have to retake right after the next semester (duh).
The first sentence means, "The main theme in this gastroenterology edition is abnormality of digestive microflora." Important words: основной (the main), тема (theme; in the paragraph it's written as темой), нарушения (Google translates it as violation but I guess in the paragraph context it means abnormality), микрофлоры (microflora), желудочно-кишечного тракта (gastrointestinal tract).

What I get from the second sentence is that there is particular attention to syndrome of excessive bacterial growth in adult and children. I don't get the meaning of, "теории пишеварительно-транспортного конвейера и т.д." The word пишеварительно is corrected by Google Translate as пищеварительно and it means digestive. Транспортного means transport and конвейера means conveyor while т.д. is etc. Important words: синдрому (syndrome), избыточного (excess), бактериального (bacteria), рост (growth; in the paragraph it's written as роста), взрослых (adult), детей (children).

From the third sentence I know other issues considered are functional dyspepsia, principles of diarrhea treatment, and the use of ursodeoxycholic acid in clinical practice (essay based on foreign studies).

I get from fourth sentence that there are issues presented separately (I think it's not a proper translation) related to gastroenterology: diabetic gastroparesis and psychological aspect of esophageal spasm occurence. Important words: смежные (related), диабетический гастропарез (diabetic gastroparesis), психические (mental), возникновения (occurence), эзофагоспазма (esophageal spasm).

Overall, the paragraph is a content summary of the journal, which, in July, focus on gastroenterology. The main theme is abnormality of digestive microflora with particular attention to syndrome of excessive bacterial growth. Other issues considered, which are based on foreign studies, are functional dyspepsia, diarrhea treatment, and use of ursodeoxycholic acid. The journal also presented diabetic gastroparesis and psychological aspect of esophageal spasm occurence.

Learning Foreign Words

I don't have one strict method of learning language. I try a lot of methods from reading a text in foreign language, watching a video in the language, or trying to speak and write in the language I learn. However, when it comes to vocabulary, I don't remember the time when I study vocabulary. I learn vocabulary unconsciously. I don't try to make a word list or flash card. I just read and listen a lot to the language I learn.
Recently I found an article in lingholic about how to remember words when learning a language. I thought, "Why don't I give it a try?" In that article there are four methods of remembering words. I haven't tried the first and second method yet. I tried the third method (Luca Lampariello's method) and it worked well since it's almost similar to how I learn language. I read a Russian article and tried to translate it. Few days later, I will have to read the translation and translate it back to Russian. The fourth method (the GoBillyKorean method) is also good but I didn't learn 50 words a day. I only did 15 words yesterday and 15 words today.

P.S. I like the words on the top of lingholic page, "Language learning is a journey, not a destination."

Metode Ilmiah dalam Curious George

"Metode ilmiah adalah tentang berpikir kreatif, mengambil risiko, dan bersedia untuk gagal," kata para profesor di serial Curious George episode "The Fully Automatic Monkey Fun Hat".

Why You Should (or Shouldn't) Watch Ryan Higa's Positive Video Before OSCE (or Exam, or Anything)

Before my previous OSCE, I prepared by practicing quite a lot and watched YouTube. I watched Ryan Higa's video "How to Stay Positive". In the beginning of that video he said that he always imagined the worst scenario before doing something to mentally prepare himself in case he failed. I thought that was a cool idea so I did that. Before OSCE, I imagined the worst scenario possible like, "What if I forget to wash my hand? What if I forget to wear gloves? What if I get nervous and forget to ask the important questions?" I happened to not forget the important questions but I forget to ask some additional questions. The result: I passed with two A's and two B's.
I don't suggest to think about the worst scenario if it makes you extremely nervous. However, I admit that the video works for me. I become less nervous by imagining the worst scenario because well, if the bad things happen I won't be shocked.
You can also watch the entire video to see a different kind of positivity and if you think he spoke too fast (which he often does), you can read this transcript. Believe me, I was surprised to find lybio. I mean, really? YouTube transcript? I've read some film transcripts in the internet but I just found one site providing YouTube transcript.

"Jleb" Harry Potter Moments

First of all, some Indonesians use the word "jleb" to imitate the sound of stab. You know, when a knife or any sharp object stabs something (right now I feel bad while imagining the stab). The word "jleb" is also used to describe such deep feeling like having your chest stabbed. We can get "jleb" feeling while reading a sad part in a novel, watching a romantic scene of a film, or hearing someone insulting us.
Today I stumble upon a Harry Potter meme in Google and when I open it, it led me to a Pinterest page full of Harry Potter memes. Some are fun but a lot of them are heart-touching (fine, I have found an English word for "jleb": heart-touching). For me, the most "jleb" part in Harry Potter series is Snape's love for Lily. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an interesting-for-me meme about this. However, I found some other "jleb" memes about other "jleb" parts.

I like this meme, especially that Molly Weasley part, "Molly Weasley taught us that we can always rely on our mother." The Draco part is quite nice, too. "Draco Malfoy taught us that everyone makes mistakes. He taught us that everyone has feelings."

Another "jleb" moment in Harry Poter series is Fred's death. Really, we didn't expect such thing happens to the Weasley twin. This meme describes it well.

I don't need to say much about this.

Another good thing written in Harry Potter is about motherly love. Even the seemingly arrogant mother like Narcissa Malfoy will do anything to make sure that her son is safe. And her act saved Harry, too.

Finally, this one tells us not to generalise everything.

German Again

I had learned German when I was in 10th grade and yesterday I found Learn German Easily site then I learned German again. I tried lesson 1-10 and I will learn the next lessons later. Lessons in the site are easy and simple. Really, we won't find any complicated grammatical lesson because the site creator himself doesn't like to teach grammar.
Anyway, the word "Himmel" sounds nice to my ears.

Blank Big Note Book

Yesterday my mother gave me a big note book (B5 size) which I haven't figured yet what I will use it for. I have a note book for taking lecture note, a small one I use for journal, and a not-so-small-but-not-big-either one for language lessons (I rarely use this one since I mostly read, listen, and talk while learning language; now I understand why my foreign language writing is not so developed).

Everything Wrong with This Blog (and the Owner)

If you like to watch film and browse YouTube, you may be interested in CinemaSins channel. In that channel, there is "Everything Wrong With" series. I'm now trying to make a list of everything wrong with my blog.

  1. The blog owner is an Indonesian but she mostly writes in English.
  2. Although she mostly writes in English, the tags and categories are written in Indonesian.
  3. By the time this post is written, the "about" page is still empty.
  4. The owner doesn't show her picture.
  5. She doesn't mention her clear identity either.
  6. The owner takes less than one hour to write a blog post but she takes days to write a statement of motivation.
  7. The owner watches YouTube videos more often than she reads blog posts by other bloggers.
  8. This blog has sister site (is there such thing?) in WordPress.
  9. Contents of those two sites are the same.
  10. There are a lot of links to other websites included in posts of this blog.
  11. However, the owner sometimes just reads the articles at a glance.
  12. The owner learns Russian but she hasn't written a post completely in Russian.
  13. Point no.12 also works for other languages she learns.
  14. She wants many people to visit her blog but she only tells her blog address to three campus friends.
Sins: 14
Sentence: keeping blogging.

P.S. I sentence myself so I sentence something nice.

Finding a Proper Motto

Currently, I'm filling a CV (I will tell later what this CV is for) and it was fine until I saw that the CV required a life motto. I'm quite practical and I don't need a certain motto to live my life. Perhaps I follow a motto unconsciously but really, I don't really pay attention to the words. However, there are some words said by either fictional or real people that will be nice to be life motto. Here I try to make the list.

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger"
-Friedrich Nietzsche-
When I was a teenager, I had some big problem and these words from Nietzsche helped me stay strong. Now I'm not a teenager anymore and I sometimes feel that I'm not so strong as I was. Perhaps I should remember this saying again.

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
-Albus Dumbledore-
I fail a lot in medical school but I choose to continue studying medicine. Does that count?

"You are human with one life and it is up to you to make it the best life you can."
-Dan Howell-
I sometimes think I watch YouTube too much that I quote on a YouTuber. Those are nice words anyway.

"I don't have superpowers, there's no magic spell. But I remain faithful for things to go well."
-Alex Day-
That's a part of "I've Got What It Takes" lyrics by Alex Day. The song is like an affirmation for me.

"To have another language is to possess a second soul."
-Charlemagne-
I like learning language and those words make me feel like Voldemort with some horcruxes. Whoa, I possess other souls in the form of languages.

"There are no accidents."
-Master Oogway-
I just love this quote. No much comments about it.

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
-Bruce Lee-
This quote is about determination and persistence: two things that -I admit- I sometimes lack of.

Conan, After a Long Time

Recently, I withdrew from facebook (I still do, though). At first I thought I would be bored since I usually spent a lot of time in facebook but I now find out that such withdrawal is a good thing. I should just find another interesting activity and luckily, there was Detective Conan.
My cousin borrowed some Detective Conan comics from her friend and we read it. It's been a long time that I haven't read Conan and when I read it again, I felt the excitement. Reading detective story always makes me curious and thrilled. I just can't stop reading before finding out the culprit and how the case actually happens. Beside that, in Detective Conan, there are a lot of unique facts and I could study without feeling studying.
P. S. If you have read Sherlock Holmes, you'll know that some aspects in Conan are inspired by Sherlock Holmes, like Shinichi knows a person's condition at the first time they met and how he notices details others will miss. Well, Shinichi Kudo is a Sherlockian.

Ultracrepidarian, Go Away!

I'm a book lover (I don't love all books but I'm still a book lover anyway) and once I type "book lover" in Google search then I found an article of "10 Words Every Book Lover Should Know".
One word in that article is ultracrepidarian. It's a word which refers to someone who gives an opinion on things s/he knows nothing about. I laughed at that word since I didn't expect there was specific word for such person. Beside that, I'm often annoyed by ultracrepidarian. Well, people are free to express their opinion but sometimes they do it too much and, excuse me, annoyingly (I wanted to use another word but I thought it would be rude so I said annoyingly). I saw many examples of ultracrepidarian before presidential election in 2014 (this election potentially caused mental illness, huh). Everytime I watch TV or log in to social media, there were many people who talked about politics without understanding the issue. I thought the ultracrepidarians would stop after the election but no. After the election, there are various quick count or exit poll results and now many people are talking about it without enough understanding in statistics. I need to stay away from social media I guess.
By the way, I mentioned mental illness in this post. Here I found types of mental illness from WebMD.

Studying Some Statistics

As I mentioned before, in Indonesia there are various quick count results. In social media, people waste their time in argument about which result is right. I've ever said that I can't stand conflict so I decided to study statistics instead.
I studied statistics when I was at school so I still remember some basic measures like mean, median, and modus. I knew the use of mean and modus but I didn't really understand why we should consider median. I then found a basic statistics web site. In that site, we can study not only how to measure but also when to do it and why.
I also found another website called STATS. If you click STATS Simplified in that site, you will find explanation of some terms that you may hear or read in statistical report.
Good luck in study statistics! Ya'atik el 'afi.

How You Should Handle Defeat

Actually I've wanted to post this for quite a while but I procrastinated.
I watched the football match between Germany and Brazil at a glance (I never watch football match completely) and Germany won. It's a huge victory for Germany since they scored 7 goal while Brazil only scored one goal.
Despite the defeat, I saw Brazilians do two things that made me amazed. First, after the match, I saw David Luiz and another Brazilian player (Luiz Gustavo if I'm not mistaken) pray. Yes, they did pray calmly (as I saw), after such defeat. It feels like a reminder for me since I never feel calm after a failure or defeat. Even if I pray after defeat, I won't pray calmly. I mean, my mind will keep on remembering the defeat so that I can't focus on my prayer. Second, on Facebook, a friend of mine shared a picture of Brazilian man handed a trophy replica to German fan and congratulated her. You can see the picture and story here and a video about that man here (thanks to reddit.com). Do you remember the last time you respected and congratulated your rival or opponent after being defeated?

Another Conflict in Another Place

Now when I log in to my facebook, I see a lot of people share photos or article of Israel attack to Palestine. I won't say much because, as a nice friend told me, "It's better if you study the history before talking about such matter." I just wish that the attack would be over soon. Seriously, I don't have the heart to see picture of children being wounded.

Quick Count Joke

Presidential election is over. We still have to wait for the result.
However...
Note: I don't study statistics a lot so if I make mistake in this post or you want to add some information, please write in the comment section.
Usually after election we can see quick count result in television. By seeing quick count we get the "rough result" of who wins the election without having to wait for the official result for a long time.
Before this election, quick count was fine. Quick count result was always close to the official result and all television channels showed the nearly same result. However this time, for some reason I don't understand, the result is various. What a joke! They all use statistical method, don't they? Some people abuse science, I think.

"RESPECT THE SCIENCE!" said Kowalski.

It's July 8th and I'm Worried

Tomorrow (July, 9th 2014), Indonesia will hold presidential election. I can say it's the scariest presidential election ever in Indonesia. There are only two candidates and people seem to split into two allies. I have no problem with people supporting their candidates but believe me, this year it's too much. They not only support one candidate but also "attack" the other one. If you are not into conflict and you have television or social media, you will see war you can't stand.
Talking about television... Hmm, I sadly say that it's now difficult to find neutral television channel. Some owners of television channels are into politics and you can guess what happens. Yes, the news is constantly about supporting one candidate and "silently attack" the other one.
In social media, the condition worsens. People express their opinion freely, even too freely and there was one time when I was afraid of logging in to my Facebook account because everytime I see my Facebook home, there are people talking about the candidates. Well, right now I'm writing about presidential election in my blog so I understand if you feel bad reading this post.
Finally, I hope Indonesia remains peaceful no matter who the new president is.

Overview of Overview of Endocrine System

I didn't know what to write. Actually I wanted to make summary of endocrine system but when I opened my book, suddenly my mood went away. You may wonder why I wanted to summarize endocrine system. Well, endocrinology was the last written exam I didn't fail. It's clear enough, isn't it?
However, I still read my book but not so thoroughly. By the way, the book I use is Human Anatomy and Physiology by Elaine Marieb and Katja Hoehn. In the beginning of each chapter in this book, we can read an overview. In this post, I'm going to write overview of overview of endocrine system.

  • Endocrine system release hormones. Hormones influence metabolic activity.
  • Hormone is chemical messenger sent to extracellular fluid.
  • There are two kinds of gland: exocrine and endocrine
  • Exocrine gland has duct and it secretes stuff outside, example: sebaceous gland.
  • Endocrine gland is ductless and there are a lot of vessels on it. The secretion is carried by blood.
  • "Pure" endocrine glands include pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pineal glands.
  • Hypothalamus has both endocrine and neural functions.
  • Pancreas, gonads, and placenta perform endocrine and other functions.

TANGAN WAKTU

selalu terulur ia lewat jendela
yang panjang dan menakutkan
selagi engkau bekerja, atau mimpi pun
tanpa berkata suatu apa

bila saja kautanya: mau apa
berarti terlalu jauh kau sudah terbawa
sebelum sungguh menjadi sadar
bahwa sudah terlanjur terlantar

belum pernah ia minta izin
memutar jarum-jarum jam tua
yang segera tergesa-gesa saja berdetak
tanpa menoleh walau kauseru

selalu terulur ia lewat jendela
yang makin keras dalam pengalaman
mengarah padamu tambah tak tahu
memegang leher bajumu

(1959)

NARCISSUS

seperti juga aku: namamu siapa, bukan?
pandangmu hening di permukaan telaga dan rindumu dalam
tetapi jangan saja kita bercinta
jangan saja aku mencapaimu dan kau padaku menjelma

atau tunggu sampai angin melepaskan selembar daun
dan jatuh di telaga: pandangmu berpendar, bukan?
cemaskah aku kalau nanti air hening kembali?
cemaskah aku kalau gugur daun demi daun lagi?

(1971)

SEPASANG SEPATU TUA

        mereka pahami berdua

(1973)

TERBANGNYA BURUNG

terbangnya burung
hanya bisa dijelaskan
dengan bahasa batu
bahkan cericitnya
yang rajin memanggil fajar
yang suka menyapa hujan
yang melukis sayap kupu-kupu
yang menaruh embun di daun
yang menggoda kelopak bunga
yang paham gelagat cuaca
hanya bisa disadur
ke dalam bahasa batu
yang tak berkosa kata
dan tak bernahu
lebih luas dari fajar
lebih dalam dari langit
lebih pasti dari makna
sudah usai sebelum dimulai
dan sepenuhnya abadi
tanpa diucapkan sama sekali

Suddenly It's Noisy

Note: if you don't particularly like anything related to ENT clinic then read other posts.
I've ever written in one post that my mother accused me of having hearing problem. I denied that and thought I only had concentration problem. I just found out that my mother was right.
Last Tuesday I got water in my left ear. I couldn't get it out of my ear and it was painful. The pain wasn't so disturbing so I ignored it (such a careless medical student). However, on Thursday I got annoying headache. After coming home from campus, I took a nap. Usually, headache goes away after nap but that time it didn't. I told my mother and we visited an ENT specialist.
The ENT specialist we visited was a senior one. I last visited him when I was in 5th grade and he didn't change much. Yes, I had a little hearing problem when I was an elementary student. However after that I didn't have hearing problem anymore so I didn't go to ENT clinic but clean my ear using cotton swab instead. Back to the story, the doctor told me that my ceruminous gland is different. According to the doctor, which I also read in Human Anatomy and Physiology by Elaine Marieb and Katja Hoehn, "In many people, the ear is naturally cleansed as the cerumen dries and then falls out of the external acoustic meatus. In other people (including me), cerumen builds up and becomes compacted." The water trapped in my ear worsened the condition. He also said that cleaning ears using cotton swab would only push the cerumen inside and it would build up more. I then realised that I had made a huge mistake by using cotton swab. I should visited ENT clinic every three months to remove the cerumen.
The doctor then removed my cerumen and suddenly the world sounded noisy. I've had hearing problem which I ignored for a long time and then I'm healed. Everything sounds loud now which is sometimes quite disturbing but I'm happy because it's not only louder but also clearer.

Pathology Student

Being a medical student, one thing that I consider difficult is pathology, both clinical pathology and histopathology. Luckily, I have just found a website called Pathology Student. I discover the site when I wanted to revise conjugated and unconjugated bilirubinemia. That article use scientific language and medical term but somehow, it’s still easy to understand.
I then decided to subsribe to path bite. It’s a mail contained a little information related to pathology that we will get from Monday to Friday. I think doing a little of something regularly is better than doing much at only one time, especially when it comes to studying pathology.

Marie Antoinette Wore Louis Vuitton

When I was in high school, I went to science class. It means that in my 11th and 12th grade I studied chemistry, physics, and biology. I didn't study geography, economics, and sociology. I still studied history anyway but not so much as students from social class did.
Since I didn't study a lot of history, it means that I didn't get interesting history lesson like French revolution, World War, etc. One day, my cousin was going to take university entrance test and she told me some history lessons. She said that by telling stories, she could study at the same time. "One of the causes of French revolution was economic difficulty. The people was in economic crisis while Marie Antoinette, the king's wife, spent the money to buy Louis Vuitton and Prada," she told me. I laughed hard at that story, "Haha, there were no Louis Vuitton and Prada when French revolution happened." "My tutor told us that way so we could remember easily," she said.
By the way, this is an article of French Revolution from Encyclopedia Britannica. Also try to take some quizzes from that site. You'll get a ton of interesting information.

That Moment When You Need Subtitle

Today I went to International Office with a Vietnamese friend and an Indonesian friend to practice for OSCE. International Office is a place in my university where international students hang around or hold some events. In that room there was also another Vietnamese student and when she talked to my friend in Vietnamese, my Indonesian friend and I was like, "I guess we need subtitle."
I think my Vietnamese friend also feels the same when I talk Javanese to my friends. She needs subtitle, too. Well, she'll understand Javanese sooner or later since she's quite close to some "crazy Javanese" like my friends and me.

Some Girly Things I Browse

I'm a girl but not so girly. However, I often browse some girly things in internet for fun. Here I have the list.
1. Make up
I rarely wear make up. In fact, I even forget when the last time I wear powder was. I wear minimal make up to a party though. In spite of that, watching and reading some make up tutorial is quite entertaining.
2. Fashion Show
I'm a casual person and I don't follow trend but I often watch fashion show in YouTube. I like to see how the models walk.
3. Wedding Dress and Other Wedding Stuff
I don't plan on wearing dress in my wedding. I prefer kebaya. However, seeing wedding dress pictures with my girlfriends is another kind of fun.
4. Nail Art
I don't polish my nail but I admit that some nail art videos in YouTube are interesting. Visit Robin Moses Nail Art channel for some examples.
5. Hair Do
My hair is short and I usually only comb it and sometimes put bobby pin. However, why not watch some braid tutorial?

Goal Celebration

I watched the World Cup match of Spain vs Australia at a glance (yes, at a glance) and I noticed that there was no "festive" goal celebration. Is "festive" a right word? Sorry, I found difficulty in finding the word for describing the "usual goal celebration". Perhaps I just missed the celebration because I only watched at a glance or maybe there was actually no festive celebration. Well, Spain had lost in the previous two matches and so had Australia and it meant they won't be advanced to round of 16 no matter how they scored in that match. Non festive goal celebration is still nice anyway.
Talking about goal celebration, here are some photos of best goal celebrations. By the way, how could Miroslav Klose do that?
Do you have any personal favourite of goal celebration?

La Vie en Rose

I did some random browsing and I found three versions of La Vie en Rose song by Edith Piaf. The first version I found was by Dodie Clark, I then listened to the original version by Edith Piaf and the English version sung by Louis Armstrong.
In my opinion, the original version by Edith Piaf is beautiful and classy, Louis Armstrong's version is romantic while Dodie Clark's version, which combines both French and English lyrics, is sweet and quite playful.
Which one is your favourite version? Do you have another favourite version of La Vie en Rose?

Van Gogh and Digoxin

I've taken a written exam in cardiology and when I studied for exam, I found these articles about digoxin toxicity and xanthopsia. I read that article and ended up admiring Van Gogh's paintings.
Ocular manifestation of digoxin toxicity is xanthopsia (yellowing of the vision). One of the article says, "Most experts believe that the famous artist Vincent van Gogh was using foxglove (the flower that digoxin is derived from) and this explains his yellow paintings toward the end of his life." Van Gogh used foxglove to treat his epilepsy which is no longer an indication.
Still, I admire those yellow paintings.

Power Nap: FAIL

Yesterday I was studying cardiology when suddenly I felt sleepy. I tried to continue studying but I couldn't focus on my textbook so I decided to take a power nap.
According to WebMD, power nap is better than coffee to enhance focus. It also said that 30 to 60 minutes of napping was good for decision making skills while 60 to 90 minutes of napping played a key role in making new connections in the brain. Since it was 13.30 and I didn't actually want a long nap, I set my alarm for 14.15. I ended up waking at 15.30. Well, I took that as bonus.

Some Encouragement

Everyone can do something good. Some just need encouragement to do so.
A friend of mine whom I believe to be the only regular reader of this blog often told me to write more often. At first I wasn't so motivated (I still depended on my moodto write) but one day he told me again to write more often and I got motivated. I started to write everyday without caring much about the result.
I often failed in exam until one day I told my mother, "What's the use in studying? I still fail and forget anyway." Then she told me that it would be worse if I didn't study. "Failure is fine; at least you try," she said.
If someone you know does something good or is on the edge of giving up, it's your duty as a human being to help and encourage them (speaking in Dan Howell's style).

Time Zone

My time zone is GMT+7 and this blog use different time zone that I don't know how to set.

Garfield, Odie, and Me

Recently I watched Garfield film after a long time I hadn't watched Garfield. This time I realise that Odie is quite like me in social setting while Garfield is me in this blog and at home.

Learn More, Study Less

To be honest, I sometimes don't like to see my friends studying in campus. Reasons: 1. I'm too "lazy"; 2. They study "too much". However, I can't blame them because the truth is they often pass the tests while I often fail.
Anyway, I believe that good studying method doesn't "torment" us mentally, yet make us understand and remember for a long time and surely, pass the exams.
If you feel the same way: you're "lazy" but want to pass the exams and remember for a long time, you may try this method: How to Learn More and Study Less by Scott Young. In that link, there is a link to Young's website and free e-book download. I've just found it so I'm also new to this (actually not so new because I realise I used it for my English class when I was in school).
Let's learn together.

Something about Habit

I don't call myself a writer. I just like to write and recently, I'm in a good mood to write a lot in this blog. Yeay, this blog is not abandoned!
I wanted to keep up this good mood and continue writing then I found an article entitled Write Every Day in 2014: 14 Steps for Forming a Writing Habit .  Click the link to read the article. It works not only for writing but also other habits. Reading the article, I found out that I made some mistakes in developing habit.
Let's take a look at step 1 and 5.
1. Don't try to change everything at once.
I once set a target like this, "This month I'll read my textbooks regularly everyday, learn Hebrew until I can read and write the letter, and learn to speak Arabic". This way, I couldn't focus on what I do well. If you're easily bored like me, it's fine to do various thing but remember to make priority scale. In other words, one thing is needed to be done seriously, the others are recreations.
5. Don't choose a word count goal.
Focus on writing regularly, for the same duration. Don't focus on how many words your write. The article said, "Studies have also shown that focus on process is far more effective for staying motivated than a focus on results." I also made mistake in this step. I often told myself, "This evening, you should finish reading this chapter." I thought that since I had difficulty to concentrate while studying, I needed to set a goal for myself to finish reading a chapter, review, etc. The result was mostly I failed to fulfill that goal because I got bored before I finished reading. Oh, how I wish reading textbook were as exciting as reading novel or comic.

Good luck on your good habit

Skipper's Wisdom: Science and Mad Science

It's been a long time that I haven't watched Penguins of Madagascar and suddenly I remember Skipper said something about the benefit and destruction caused by science. I didn't remember what exactly Skipper said (I only remember he mentioned artificial flavor) so I searched and found it in IMDb. Skipper said, "You know, science is a wonderful thing. It gives us toasters, and televisions, and artificial flavors. But mad science that just ends with dicey super weapons, freakish monsters, and artificial flavors." He said that in the episode "Jiggle" when Kowalski invented a jelly that could eat fruit and increase in size.

Choices, not Abilities

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are far more than our abilities"
-Albus Dumbledore-
The Sorting Hat said that Harry could be great in Slytherin but Harry chose Gryffindor then he was in Gryffindor.
You have right to choose and often, people will judge you based on your choice more than your ability. Still, you are free to choose and they are free to judge.

How to Prevent Procrastination

Just do it.

My Version of Study Tips

It feels strange for me to write about study tips but I'm going to write anyway.
I never actually pay attention to studying technique. My study method continuously changes and I still can't decide which method works best for me. However, one thing for sure: I am a laid back person. No matter how difficult the subject, I'm mostly calm. Note: feeling calm while studying doesn't always mean good grade but it means healthy studying.
People say that it's important to develop time management skill. I've ever tried it and failed. I made a schedule of what and when I should study in a day. However, I mostly ended up ignoring my schedule. My fault was I listed a lot of subjects and when I studied them, I realised that the subjects required longer time than in my schedule. So, if you considering making a schedule (any schedule, not only for studying), you should also consider the duration you need to study the subject.
Studying the topic before getting class/lecture helps us understand better. We should also review the material after we get the class so that we dwon't forget it easily. However, I admit that it's easier said than done. When it comes to my favourite subjects, I can study before and after class, even if the subjects aren't taught in school or campus. However, if I'm not interested in the subjects, I need to "push" myself more.
It's also important to take break. Your brain deserves rest.
p.s. Since I have problem in concentrating, I don't include it in this post. Perhaps later when I figure out how to concentrate well.

Здоровье

Recently I found a YouTube channel called funrussian.com and I viewed some videos of it. This channel is related to the website www.funrussian.com and in that website there is "Russian Word of the Day" program. I've subscribed to the program and I get one Russian word every day with an example of sentence containing the word. Today I get the word Здоровье. It's pronounced zda-RO-v'ye and it means health. The sentence, or this time sentences are Береги своё здоровье. Кушай хорошо. It means "Take care of your health. Eat well."
I was excited when I got that word. To make it clear, I'm currently preparing for my upcoming exams and for me, receiving such words feels like hearing positive thing; it's an encouragement. It feels like "ya'atik El 'afi" wish.

Please Stay Healthy

Watch this YouTube video by Maha first.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA9HywaUroU

Ya'atik El 'afi means may Allah give you health. It's a shami Arabic expression spoken to person who is working hard, studying hard, or doing something important. Response to "ya'atik El 'afi" is "Allah ya 'afik" which meaning is similar to the first saying. In that video you can learn how the words change when you speak to female or to many people.
You may study or work as hard as you want but please stay healthy. Ya'atiku El 'afi.

Practice 10,000 Times

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
-Bruce Lee-

That quote from Bruce Lee is one of my favourite quotes. It gives me strength when I fail on something, when I start over learning, or when I practice something.
When I fail and try again, I always remember that quote. Take a real example: failing on exam. Once I failed on my neurology exam then I took a remedial test. I found out that I failed on my remedial test so that I had to take a "short semester". In short semester, we had lecture again then we took another exam. I passed my exam after that short semester. That was the time when I found this quote. After finding it, I told a "serious joke" to my mother. I said, "Mom, this is a quote from Bruce Lee. He fears the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. Well, I've studied neurology three times: before exam, before remedial test, and in short semester. It means that I have to study neurology 9,997 times more to master it while my friends who don't have to take short semester still have to study it 9,999 or 9,998 times more."
It doesn't mean that I'm happy when I fail. Of course I'm sad when I fail. I'm normal. I just see failure as a chance to learn. Even if I don't fail, that quote still works when I start over learning. I actually learned Russian when I was in secondary school then for some reason (or without reason) I didn't continue learning it. Now I decide to learn Russian again and I've started over studying the letters. At first I was like, "I think I don't have to study the letters. I'm capable of reading and writing it." However, even some information or ability can vanish if you don't use or practice it for a long time and that's what happened to me. I tried to read a Russian text. I could read it but it took a long time because I needed more time to remember the letter then I decided to study the letters again. Well, I have to practice Russian 10,000 times to master it.
If you're currently trying to achieve or master something but you experience a lot of failure, Keep trying. You need to practice 10,000 times.

Writing Prompts

I like to write but I often can't decide what to write. I browsed through Google and I found websites called creativewritingprompts.com and journalingprompts.com Try to visit those sites if you want to write something with unexpected prompts.

25 Minutes: My First Impromptu Post

I used "inspire me!" feature in WordPress and it says, "Take a line from a song that you love or connect with. Now forget the song, and turn that line into the title or inspiration for your post." I've never tried impromptu writing before. I used to make draft first then edit it and finally post it to my blog. This time I write directly in my blog after I got the prompt from WordPress.
I recently listen a song by MLTR entitled "25 Minutes". For some reason I don't want to explain the lyrics. I just want to write that in that song, the guy is 25 minutes too late. Whoa, 25 minutes doesn't seem short but it's not long either. However, in such duration, a great change can happen. Take your time, use it carefully. Some things should be done quickly while others are better done slowly. You decide how you should use your time.
p.s. I have WordPress page but the contents are the same with this blog.

Some Call It Black Dog: My View on Depression

Wow, I create a cool title (in my opinion). Hopefully the content is as cool as the title.

I won’t write about depression in medical term because I haven’t studied psychiatry thoroughly. I’m going to write what I know from experience.

Recently I found a video in YouTube entitled “I hada black dog, his name was depression”. It’s an interesting video created by Matthew Johnstone. I then visited his website and I saw some interesting graphic based on his experience in depression and how he dealt with it.

I’ve ever felt depressed, too. One day, I suddenly felt sad and bored then I cried and I couldn’t focus on studying. I stopped crying for a while and I browse the internet to read about depression. I took a depression-anxiety-stress test and I found out that I experienced moderate depression and stress.

From Johnstone’s video, my experience, and other information that I got, it’s important to be honest about your feeling. I don’t suggest you to hit anyone you hate for the sake of honesty. I mean that you don’t have to pretend to be happy when you’re actually not. I wasted my time convincing myself that I was fine while in fact I wasn’t. When you feel sad, talk to someone you trust. Tell them about your feeling. If you don’t know whom to talk to, try to write in journal. Write anything that you feel honestly and what may cause you feel that. Don’t wait until that bad feeling accumulate and explode. It’s also important to take enough sleep.

Finally, try to accept and forgive yourself. In my opinion, it’s difficult to change yourself to be a better person if you don’t forgive yourself at first.

P. S. How was the content? Was it as cool as the title?

When Will You Speak Russian Fluently?

It may sound strange but it happens. Recently when I see my friends achieve something, win contests, or such things, my mind always questions, “When will you speak Russian fluently?”

As I’ve ever written in this blog (you can read the post here), I often envy people for their achivement and such feeling can actually be positive if you're motivated to be a better person. However this time I’m not motivated to gain the same achievement. I’m motivated to speak Russian instead.

I can’t explain why but let me try to explain. I wrote that I liked learning language and I was interested in Russia. Perhaps deep in my mind I view speaking Russian fluently as an achievement.

Finally I want to thank my friends whose achievement inspires me to speak Russian. Go and achieve more so I can speak Russian sooner.

Я не русская но я говорю по-русски.

LIstening Project

There are a lot of articles saying we should find our talent and passion. The problem, I'm not sure what actually my talent is. I'm not an artist and I'm not good at sport either. However, I find out that since I was kid, I have always been talkative. I talked a lot and I still do. I also listen. I often listen to my friends talking about their problem without giving any advice.
My listening skill is quite good but I'm not good at hearing. Yes, listening is different from hearing. According to Oxford Learner's Pocket Dictionary, Fourth Edition, listen means pay attention to sb/sth that you can hear while hear means be aware of sounds with your ears. My teacher explained, "When you listen, you intend to do it before but when you hear, you may not intend to do it. Example: I heard the thunder while listening to the song. Can you see the difference? In that sentence, I had intended to listen to the music but I hadn't expected to hear the thunder." Back to the topic, I'm not so good at hearing to the point that my mother accused me of having hearing problem. She intends to take me to ENT clinic while in fact, I just sometimes focus too much on what I do that I can't hear her calling me. I once wrote in this blog that I was difficult to concentrate. Yes, I am but once I concentrate, I do it totally.
I guess I have talent for communication so I make a project which I call "Listening Project". Since I talk a lot, I think it's important to make more time for listening. In this project, I'm dedicating a week from Tuesday, April 29th to Monday, May 5th for listening to people. I'll just listen to them and respond if it's necessary then I take note of what they say and share some in this blog.

p.s. I'm sorry if I sound like bragging about my suspected talent. By the way, I still believe I have talent for communication in spite of my failure in communication OSCE.

Parents' Thought

Today I went home from campus by bus. I spent my time in the bus reading my lecture note. On the half of my journey, a woman and her little son sat beside me. The woman noticed my reading and asked if I was going to have exam. Soon she discovered that I was (I still am, by the way) a medical student.

She asked me how much it costed to enter medical school and how much I had to pay each semester. I told her how much and I also said that the cost rised every year. She also told me that she wanted her son to be a doctor and she had been saving money for that.

“We have no idea what Indonesia would be like in the future and what profession will be needed much in this country,” she said. “However, doctors are always needed. That’s why I want my son to be a doctor,” she continued.

During conversation, I mostly listened. So many things happened in my mind while listening. I saw how parents concerned a lot about their children’s future even before the children  thought about it. I said parents because I remembered my parents while that woman talked about her son. I also realised that doctor was still considered a profession with future certainty while in fact I’m sometimes still uncertain about my future as a doctor.

That conversation also reminded me how I had really wanted to be a doctor when I was in high school and how my mother had convinced me a lot of time to change my decision. My mother thought that medical school was not a “happy place” and now I’m a medical student, I find out that medical school can be both happy and sad place at the same time. However, as my mother said, “It is your choice. Now study.”

It’s still a long journey ahead for me to be a doctor and a long time ahead for that woman’s son to make decision. I wish them a good present and future.

7 Facts about Me

I see many YouTubers make "7 Facts" video so here I list 7 facts about me.
  1. My blood type is B but I don’t know my Rhesus. Do you believe that blood type can determine personality?
  2. I like to learn languages but the only foreign language I can speak almost fluently is English. The reason is I don’t have strong willpower to master foreign language so I jump from one language to the others. Some language I’ve ever tried to learn are English, Russian, Italian, German, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Polish, French, Spanish, Swedish, and Korean.
  3. For some indescribable reason, I'm interested in Russia. I even plan on visiting Russia someday. If I try to describe the reason, perhaps it’s because... Well, as I mentioned before, it’s indescribable.
  4. I'm fond of going to bookstore. I rarely buy anything from bookstores but I go to bookstore once a week. I read some unsealed books and browse through the stationery section. I can find satisfaction only by looking at cute stationery.
  5. I like to take pictures of insects and flowers. Since I got my digital camera, the feature that impressed me a lot is macro. I like the feeling of seeing small things closely and looking at the details.
  6. I'm a listener of classic rock songs. It’s a result of my mom’s influence. She likes classic rock a lot, especially Deep Purple. In my opinion, Deep Purple is the best rock band of all time but the best rock song of all time is Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. You can disagree with me. Music taste can vary.
  7. I'm difficult to concentrate. I distract myself quite a lot while studying. I study one topic then browse internet for a long while. After that I do homework and eat snack then continue studying and play computer game and so on. The fact is, I spend more time doing distracting activity than studying.

Journaling

Last Friday I bought a small note book which I intended to use as journal. Yes, I’ve just started journaling. The reason why I decide to keep a journal is that I’ve just realized I can get massive stress (not so massive actually, I just like to exaggerate sometimes) and I think journaling can be a nice way to reduce stress. By writing private journal, I can write anything I feel or have done without worrying about being judged by others. It feels different from writing something in social media or blog. Also, if you are a writer, those random things you write in journal can be ideas for your writing.
